WHY CAN'T I LOG INTO STICK IN THE MUD? http://www.benturner.com/stick/ mud.stick.org 9000 by Rob t'Thief ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) The MUD is moving. The MUD has begun the process to change servers and your DNS server may have the MUD address cached. In other words, mud.stick.org is still pointing to the old address (since it is only an alias) and you have to wait for it to be updated. In the meantime, you must use the MUD's PHYSICAL address, like this.server.com, for instance. 2) The MUD has crashed. A coding disaster by an IMP, rebooting of the server, or Paruda tripping over the power cord are possibilities. Most likely, you can blame a Stick crash on stupidity on someone's part. Heck, even I have crashed the MUD back-to-back with certain, umm, imm commands. Sometimes, the hardware running the server craps out and the server can't send packets out to the 'Net. You may want to try using "traceroute" or "ping" to see if you're able to even reach the MUD. Every OS is different so it would take me too long to tell you how to use these commands. 3) Internet lag. Because of Internet hype, bandwidth has become severely strained and you may encounter lag when trying to reach the server, especially during the day. The server should not be generating any lag itself, since MUDs take up a very small part of CPU usage and bandwidth. You may want to try using "traceroute" or "ping" to see if you're able to even reach the MUD. Every OS is different so it would take me too long to tell you how to use these commands. 4) Hackers! Some twit hacked the server because they were pissed off at another MUD running on the same server SitM is on. I say "another MUD" because no one ever gets ticked off with Stick in the Mud. Ahem. 5) Your ISP problems. Your server is malfunctioning. Try pinging or fingering mud.stick.org to see if it goes through. It's possible that your ISP lost its connection to the Internet. Call them up to make sure, if you're at a loss for other explanations. 6) YOUR problems. You entered the address incorrectly into your MUD client. The port address is necessary! Also, your modem may have snagged and you need a FULL reboot to reset your modem. 7) You effed up on the MUD. Your site is banned or your character is denied. Try again and see if it gives you a notification message. It should tell you you are banned when you try to log in.
